Carl was born in America, but his father was a German. Although it's unclear how long he's been in the military, he must have joined when he was still very young. His exact age is unknown, but he is still young, and it's likely he joined the Academy during his teenage years; since you're four years in the Naval Academy, he'd have been in his early twenties when he graduated. He has been in the military for at least 10 years, since he has been working with D3 for the past 10 years. He has gained extreme skill, and became a skilled sniper used for a great variety of assassinations. Not unlikely, he has become a specialist within the Navy SEALs (though possibly he may belong to another SOF as well), within the specialized field of firearms and sniping. He seems to hold the rank of sergeant and warrant officer.
He was under the command of James McPherson, but one day in 2003 during a miliatry operation, one of the other soldiers went started exhibiting a mysterious power, and started killing his allies. McPherson stopped him by killing him, but he was held responsible for the many deaths of his subordinates and discharged and put in military prison.
One day though, a man the military decided to call The Poet appeared, and they found out that the soldier that had "gone insane" was a power holder, and McPherson was enlisted by a senator to lead a newly formed Special Force serving the army. D2 and D3 were recruited to it, together with an unknown D1 (most likely dead later) and D4. Considering he's amazed that D4 doesn't have a single battle scar, it can be assumed that he's been hurt in battle on before, as well as not having known D4 for all that long. Because of the difference in skill between this Special Force and the rest of the army, they're resented and feared as monsters, though despite that, D2 has some popularity among the other soldiers for his friendliness and appearance.
In 2003, ancient aliens invaded earth, attaching themselves to humans to be able to die. This caused mass-suicides, and those that managed to battle the "suicide virus" as it was called, gained abilities and became called Comrades. The reason behind the suicides was unknown at the time, however, as was the reasons behind the abilities some people gained. Not all people were "possessed" though, and D2 was not.
The existance of something called the Heart of Akuro was found out by the US army through The Poet and was eventualy located.
In 2005, the Special Force was sent to assisst the US army to move the Heart of Akuro off Japanese soil to America. They're also guarding a doctor Horner who is researching Comrades and the Heart, because the doctor is pretty eccentric and most people consider him pretty crazy. D2 is the one that is the best at handling him, and is thus made to keep an eye on him most of the time out of the members, and the only one willing to do so without prompting.
The night the Heart is to be moved to a ship which would transport it to the US, a group of Comrades break into their base. Another group is acting as diversion in another area. D4 defeat the group that broke in and they're brought to the back of a truck, where doctor Horner talks to one of the captured Comrades. Once they set off with the Heart, D2 is told to guard the doctor, while D3 is to guard the Heart, and D4 and McPherson will be in charge of the loading. One of the male Comrades escape and follow the truck the Heart is in, and when he gets close to the Heart, the Heart causes an explosion which the car D2 and the doctor are in gets involved in. D2 is mostly fine but bloody, and he has to drag the doctor away from the Heart when the Heart attacks and the location has to be evacuated. The Comrades that got captured escape and their departure is pushed back a day.
They manage to get the Heart aboard the ship uneventfully the next try, and they set off for America. As the days pass the rock that is the Heart change shape, and become sort of person-like in appearance. But aboard the ship, a body-snatching Comrade has infiltrated the crew, and takes over the captain. The Comrade changes the course and makes the ship head for south-east Asia instead of America, claiming that there has been an accident that they have to avoid on their original route. Because the Comrade used various bodies to get the captain, peopel have started to notice that there are members of the crew missing, and McPherson gets to hear about that, and that the captain told the people that were worried to not make a scene and that the disappearances won't be investigated. D2, while on break, goes to have a snack with the doctor for a while, and spots McPherson in a hurry. Sensing that something is wrong, he cuts his break short, and there's a small explosion at the location of the Heart. On the way to the research center, D2 is ordered to bring the doctor safely out of there. The ship starts to take in water and tilt, and D2 has to bring the doctor to a helicopter as the aircraft carrier becomes unable to move. They just barely survived and the Heart sank to the bottom of the ocean.
They return to America, and some time passes, but the special force is ordered to help in retreieving the heart. Before they do, they go to a military institution see a Comrade that is in solitary confinement (as per that Comerade's wishes), called the Poet. The Poet is able to see into people's hearts and sees their memories, and since he's scared of men D4 goes in to talk to him, but when he reads her heart she nearly loses it because he talks of her memories.
McPherson decides that they're going to bring The Poet with them when they go to the location of the Heart. One night D3 tries to kidnap The Poet, and D2 has to snipe D3. D3 had been possessed by a body-snatching Comrade, and was dead already. The Comrade had been scared of being exposed and thus intended to take away The Poet before that could happen. D3 is killed by McPherson.
The army has built a serch base at the location of the accident, and they are recovering debris from the accident while searching for the Heart. The Special Force finally head there with the doctor and The Poet, when the Heart is properly located. When they learn that there have been problem with the main base's radar and the communication, and that the manpower is low on the search base, McPherson takes D2, the doctor and The Poet with him to shore in a helicopter, and D2 shoots a Comrade that was attacking one of the Comrades that had attacked their base before. The Comrade D2 shot flees, but he's ordered to leave him, because they have other people to focus on. He shoots the gun out of one of the other Comrades' hand, and when the female Comrade approaches The Poet, he intends to shoot her but is frozen in place by her gaze. His rifle and gun are broken by a Comrade that controls exploding bubbles, making him useless. They retreat and when they return, D4 has captured a young female Comrade.

The responsibilities for the retrieval duties are tranferred over to McPherson, and he takes commande of the soldeirs working at the search base. The Comrade Kanou Taisuke, a Comrade that The Poet says is necessary for the retieval of the Heart, is brought to the base by holding the girl Comrade - called Aoi - hostage. Because Kanou Taisuke says that he can't lift the Heart, they need a woman called Ochiai Megumi. D2 has been put up high in a tower during the exchange, to snipe if he is ordered to.
A patrol boat crashes into the base, brought by Aoi's mother, a Comrade capable of mind control. The group of Comrades have returned, to take the Heart and Aoi and Taisuke with them. D2 is unable to shoot the mother because of all the smoke obscuring his vision.
When he spots the Comrade manipulating bubbles come onto the base and kill soldiers, D2 knows he has to finish the job of killing him, which he failed at before. They engage in a battle over a great part of the base, which ultimately ends in D2 being torn apart by dozens of exploding bubbles.
